The training program for the Pracheena Examination began in 1860 at Ratmalana Purana Vihara, marking the foundation of this historical educational establishment. In 1875, the Vidyalankara Pirivena was established in Kelaniya, Peliyagoda, by the late Ven. Rathmalane Sri Dharmaloka Thero. For over a century, the University of Kelaniya has been a center for Pracheena Bhasha studies.
In 1957, the Sri Lankan government granted university status to Vidyodaya and Vidyalankara Pirivena under the Vidyalankara University Act No. 45. On January 1, 1959, it was renamed Sri Lanka Vidyalankara University, with Ven. Kirithuduwe Sri Pannasara Thero as the first Vice-Chancellor.
In 1972, the University of Ceylon Act No.1 merged all universities into one institution, turning Vidyalankara University into a campus of the University of Sri Lanka. In 1978, with the Universities Act No. 16, the campus regained its independence as the University of Kelaniya.
Initially, only male undergraduates (both clergy and laymen) were enrolled. However, under the Higher Education Act No. 20 of 1966, female students were also granted admission.
To accommodate expansion, the University relocated in 1965/1966 to its current premises in Kelaniya. In 1959, it had five faculties:
๐ Languages | ๐๏ธ Buddhist Studies | ๐ญ Arts | ๐ฌ Science | ๐ Philosophy & Research
Today, the University has grown to include:
๐ Humanities | ๐ Social Sciences | ๐ฌ Science | โ๏ธ Medicine | ๐ผ Commerce & Management Studies | ๐ Postgraduate Studies | ๐ป Computing & Technology
With a total of 55 departments.
